Don’t be intimidated. Classes are designed for all experience and fitness levels. Our instructors and senior students will guide you throughout the class and demonstrate proper technique.

Training focuses equally on the three elements of traditional karate: Kihon (basic techniques), Kata (forms), Kumite (sparring).

A typical group class consists of the following training regimen: line-up, bow in, warm-up, training, cool down, line-up, bow out.

New students should wear comfortable workout clothes. After an introductory period, students will be asked to purchase and wear a karate gi.

Be sure to bring a water bottle and an open mind.

After an introductory period, students will be asked to purchase a karate gi (uniform), mouth guard, gloves and shin guard.

Karate belts are provided by the dojo.

Students are expected to participate in the various forms of sparring exercises and to push themselves outside of their comfort zone. With that said, safety is our highest priority, and we will do our best to accommodate each individual's comfort level.

Here are some examples of sparring drills and exercises:

Randori: Soft sparring with free-style movements for learning/application and experimentation

Dojo Sparring: Controlled sparring to practice timing, distance, speed, footwork, etc.

Kumite: Self-defense sparring with level of contact appropriate for belt level

We would rather have you show up late than not at all. With that said, we do ask that late students bow in, complete 20 push-ups, then quietly kneel in seiza near the entrance until acknowledged by the instructor. Once acknowledged, bow while kneeling, get up and quickly join the group.

While not required, we do prefer students sign-up ahead of time—especially for drop-ins.
